The Battle of Midway was a turning point in World War II because America stopped Japanese expansion, hurt the Japanese navy, and it caused Japan to be on defense for the rest of the war.
The Battle of Midway
The Battle of Midway took place on June 3rd, 1942 when the Japanese launched an air raid over the island of Midway. The Japanese wanted to invade and take over the Island of Midway so they could expand their defensive front. The Island of Midway was closer to Hawaii than all of the other land Japan had, so it would make a future attack easier. The Japanese wanted to surprise the Americans to make their victory easier, but their plan failed. This was because the Americans could interpret code, so they knew the Japanese were planning to attack. The Americans took down Japanese planes and Japanese naval ships. The Japanese ships destroyed by America were the best of the Japanese navy. This was a huge setback for the Japanese and caused them to be on defense for the rest of World War II.
