The Battle of Midway: Outcome
The Battle of Midway was fought over the course of five days. It resulted in an American victory. The Japanese, who were planning to capture the Island(s) of Midway so they could expand, lost four of their best naval ships and much of their navy soldiers. The Americans used three of their carrier ships to attack the Japanese army, and the ships were successful in their attacks. Then, an American airplane attacked the Japanese alone, but forced the Japanese planes to fly at sea level, so the Japanese ships no longer had air cover. Another American airplane sank three of four Japanese carriers. The final Japanese ship damaged the American ship, Yorktown. After the Japanese carriers were sunk, Japan brought in battleships. These ships were planning to attack America head-on, but they were forced to re-route due to American submarines. This also caused two Japanese ships to collide with each other, which severely damaged the Japanese navy. On June 5th, the final two Japanese battleships were sunk by American divers. The Japanese responded by sinking the already damaged American ship, Yorktown. After this, Japan was forced to retreat. Although America lost some lives and one of their ships, the Battle of Midway was a victory for America because much of the Japanese navy was destroyed, and Japan was forced to stay on defense for the rest of the war.
